5th Season is a Jazz/Blues trio. They are all seasoned Jazz musicians with an academic background from the university of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Being one the few bands that are playing in a trio form, they represent Jazz/Blues in a new light. The members of 5th Season are:
Mthunzi “Mo” Mchunu – Jazz Guitar
Mo has played in various Jazz and popular music outfits ranging from duo’s to sextets and beyond. He has worked with bands like The Steve Fataar Band, Dane Francis, Tree Houses on the Sea, Jazz guitar virtuoso Gerald Sloan, Heels Over Head, Beat Route etc. He has been involved in many recording projects undertaking the role of a session player and co producer, this side of him is one that helps him to understand music on a different level having had a background and holding a diploma in sound engineering from Damelin Westridge Campus under Mick Wilkinson. Drawing inspiration from fellow Durban folk such as Neil Snyman and Collin Pedi who mentored him early on. His session credits range from jingles to albums, such as The Tree Houses On The Sea album. He has now decided to focus on a ‘Trio sound’ as it is mostly unexplored in this format especially in South Africa with influences ranging from Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Jimmy Bruno, Dan Patlansky etc. Under the guidance of world renowned guitar masters Demi Fernandez and Mageshan Naidoo at UKZN Music School, he pursues the future of his sound with a passion.
Devon Hore – Jazz Drums and Percussion
Devon started music early during his high school years: under the direction of Luke Holder he performed countless shows including the first ever High School Musical 2 in Africa in 2010. Having number of popular music theaters such as Dock Yard supper theater and Kracatoa at Sibaya casino and performing with the Andrew Webster band in opening a sold out concert for the international gospel sensation Third Day he has proved to be and asset in all these projects. Under the watch full eye of Bruce Baker of the UKZN school of music he has grown in leaps and bounds and recently been elected as the drummer for the UKZN Big Band, a coveted position which solidifies his stature as a musician. He adds a solid and uniquely musical sound to the trio by playing with understanding and grace with influences ranging from Dave Weckel, Jack Dejohnette, Bill Stuart and Elvin Jones.
Brayden Hore - Bass
Brayden is an exciting bass player who has a unique approach to playing bass. He was selected as a finalist in the Yamaha young talent and was the only bass player to appear in the competition as a soloist, proving that he has a unique musical approach to playing bass, which is rare and proves to be vital in a trio format. Besides being an asset to larger combos, he continues to take the small ensemble frontier to new heights adding an undeniable amount of colour and tonality to the overall sound. Having had a good background in music and starting early on he has been involved in countless shows and productions ranging from theater to corporate events, most recently he has joined the UKZN School of Music to further his understanding and musicianship under the competent staff of the bass faculty at the school of music. With influence ranging from Victor Wooten to John Pattitucci and the late Gary King the future seems bright for him.
