Prolific double bassist Lex Futshane, who is based in Johannesburg, heads up a 4 piece band in KwaZulu Natal consisting of Durban-based talents Neil Gonsalvez on keys, Sidney Rash on drums and Zoe “The Seed” Masuku on vocals.
The exciting band performs a very diverse and versatile program from his own compositions to our home grown Mbhaqanga, contemporary music and arrangements of jazz standards by local and international artists. Lex Futshane is a composer, arranger, educator, performer and an internationally proclaimed bassist (electric and acoustic), that has spent many years in Durban performing, arranging music and lecturing in the music departments at the University of KwaZulu Natal and DIT (Natal Technikon), he is also a graduate of the former. He played bass and co-arranged on many recordings such as“Art Gecko” by Counterculture, “Durban Noise” by Jurgen Brauninger, “African Tributes” by NU Jazz Connection, “Old Blue Balls Is Back”by Felema, “Before it’s too late”- by Darius Brubeck to name just a few.
He has played with lots of South African musicians such as the likes of Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi, Bheki Mseleku, Zim Ngqawana, Feya Faku, Tu Nokwe, Neil Gonsalves, Melvin Peters, Andrew Tracy, Kevin Gibson and Ezra Ngcukana.
He has toured and performed extensively in South Africa and around the world such as in Swaziland, Zambia, Mozambique, USA, Cuba, Korea, UK and Germany.
